The Glossary Auction houses Facilitate the buying and selling of trading cards
through auctions. Auction houses normally specialize
in more expensive cards and products. Box (of cards) Card grading Sending a card to a third-party authentication &
grading company who will guarantee the authenticity
of the card, give the card a “grade” based on its
condition and encapsulate the card in a holder or
“slab”. Card number Unique identifier for a card in a set. Card set Each card will be a part of a set/collection of
cards. Case hits Cards distributed across the packs in the boxes in
a case of cards that are considered more rare and
thus more valuable to collectors. Case (of cards) Sealed container that holds a set number of boxes. Centering (Card grading) How close the image on a card is to the center of
the card. This includes both from the top, bottom,
left and right edges. The front and back of the card
are taken into account. Checklist Shows a breakdown of all cards available in a
particular set. Corners (Card grading) How sharp the four corners of the card are. Edges (Card grading) The condition of the four edges of the card -
including if there are any imperfections both to the
naked eye and under magnification. Friends and family - Paypal Paypal payment type that is not covered under the
Paypal Buyer Protection policy - with the sender
(buyer) covering all fees. Goods and services - Paypal Paypal payment type that is covered under the
Paypal Buyer Protection policy - with the receiver
(seller) covering all fees. Licensed card Cards produced by manufacturers who have paid for a
license to print the official emblems, logos and
uniform details for players. Live selling platform Allow sellers to sell cards and products on a live
stream. Local card shop (LCS) Traditional brick-and-mortar retail establishment
for sports cards. Magnetic card case / “One Touch” Offer a more premium solution to store your cards.
These cases come in two pieces with one sliding into
the other and being secured by a magnet. Marketplace site Online platform where users can sell trading cards
to one another. Match-worn/used (MW/MU) relic Relics that have been worn/used by a player in a
match or event. NFS - Not for sale Short-hand way of indicating a card is not for
sale. NFT - Not for trade Short-hand way of indicating a card is not for
trade. Non-associated (NA) relic Relics that are not associated with any specific
player or events. On-card autograph Autograph that is signed on a card itself. On-sticker autograph Autograph that a player has signed on a sticker
that the manufacturer has stuck to a card. Pack (of cards) Sealed package containing trading cards. Parallel Cards that have a different design to a standard
base card. Sometimes also referred to as a
“Variant”. Player-worn/used (PW/PU) relic Relics have been either worn or used by the player
on the card - but not in a match. PC - Personal collection A collection of cards that the person doesn't
intend on selling. It is their own personal
collection. Rookie card logo Denotes a player's first card in a product. In
modern sets the RC logo is indicative that it is the
players first/rookie year in the league OR the
player's first year in a specific manufacturer's
product(s). Serial number Cards that list the number of cards printed for
that parallel/variant along with the serial number
of the specific card. Short print (SP) A parallel/variant of a specific card that normally
has a different photograph of the player(s) on the
card or a short print exclusive design. Single An individual sports card. Sleeve A plastic sleeve used to protect the card. Surface (Card grading) The condition of the surface of the card -
including if there are any imperfections both to the
naked eye and under magnification. Toploader A rigid plastic case that is designed to keep the
card both secure and clean. Trading card show An in-person event where vendors set-up to sell
trading cards. Unlicensed card Cards produced by manufacturers who have NOT paid
for a license to print the official emblems, logos
and uniform details for players. Variant Cards that have a different design to a standard
base card. Sometimes also referred to as a
“Parallel”.
